ABOUT
Known for his smoky, velvet-like vocals, Niles Thomas is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer – an avant-garde composer creating a musical cocktail mix of crossover jazz.
Up for a 2022 GRAMMY® Nomination for "Best Jazz Vocal Album", Niles Thomas' release with long-time friend Bijon Watson, It's A Crossover Thang, is a full-length album of original songs and compositions vibrant with diversity and variety – a soulful blend of musical expressions of elation, romance, love and heartbreak.
"I'm interested in bringing jazz to the forefront of the mainstream market – that place where jazz crosses over into multi-genres and has no borders." explains Niles. "For those with a low tolerance for what "jazz" is perceived to be, I've taken a genre-bending approach – eroding the boundaries between those genres, writing and performing original music in a vocabulary that combines elements of all. For people that ask how would I describe my music, I always say that if Sade, Chet Baker, and Leonard Cohen had a love child, then I would be it."
After an 8 year collective contract under the EMI and Warner Music umbrellas in the early and mid 2000's, respectively, Niles took a sabbatical focusing on producing artists, but has returned independently with a compelling original collection of songs.
Niles Thomas’ distinctive style has been a passport to sharing the stage with many great artists including, 2X GRAMMY Winner Bob Mintzer of the Yellowjackets, 2X GRAMMY Winner John Clayton, GRAMMY Nominee Jeff Hamilton, GRAMMY Nominee Anthony Wilson, GRAMMY Award-Winner John Beasley’s Monk’estra, 5X GRAMMY Winner Billy Childs, GRAMMY Winner Bill Cunliffe, 3X GRAMMY Winner John Daversa, to name a few, and has toured the globe performing on stages worldwide. His music has been licensed in film and television throughout Europe, Asia and America, including shows on HBO, NBC, TBS, Discovery Channel and Showtime, to name a few.
Along with long-time friend and world-renowned trumpeter, Bijon Watson (Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, the late Natalie Cole, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Alicia Keys, Harry Connick Jr.), Niles Thomas is the co-founder and co-producer of the popular Jazz Republic Concert Series that occurs regularly at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas and co-hosts their radio show called B-SIDE Radio Show with The Jazz Republic broadcasted on KUNV 91.5FM Jazz & More along with Bijon Watson and radio personality, Sam Mann.
