Released as a digital single in 2021, this is one of my favorite songs. At the time I was heavily listening to LoFi Jazz music and inspired by the mix of how Jazz and Hip Hop grooves intertwine. It's such a cool blend of genres. I was exploring with new ways of approaching melody and wanting to try something new, taking me out of my comfort zone – the result are hints of spoken word with my melodic sensibilities.
The title "Mo' Better" is a play off of one of my favorite Spike Lee movies, Mo' Better Blues, starring Denzel Washington, a drama following a fictional Jazz trumpeter and a series of bad decisions resulting in jeopardizing both his relationships and his music career. Let's just say that I can relate. The soundtrack was written by the Branford Marsalis Quartet and Terence Blanchard on trumpet. Killin' record!
Suffice it to say, when I wrote this song I was going for a cool New York, groovin', chillin' and sexy tune with Spike Lee's classic film in mind. I hope you enjoy!
